Bike Check: 2023 KTM 300 XC + MtnTop Transfer 126

BUILD OVERVIEW

Bike: 2023 KTM 300 XC
Snowbike kit: 2025 MtnTop Transfer 126 x 3.25
Riding area: North Idaho
Owner / builder: Darren / Moto365

WHY THIS BUILD

We wanted to see how the KTM 300 XC would stack up against the tried-and-true KTM 450. On dirt, the 300 is known for smooth power, low-rpm manners and the ability to lug through almost anything. Bolt on a snowbike kit, though, and it turns into a completely different animal.

This build paired the light, mellow 300 XC with MtnTop's 2025 Transfer 126 x 3.25 kit. The goal was a playful North Idaho setup that could make tight terrain and set-up snow ridiculously fun—and it delivered more than we expected.

BIGGEST SURPRISE

This setup worked better than expected—way better.

On dirt, the 300 XC is a pretty mellow bike. It will lug along at low rpm and deliver its power in a smooth, controlled way. Somehow, that all changes when a snowbike kit is attached. The Transfer puts you past that smooth low-end feel and straight into the meat of the powerband.

Once the 300 comes alive, it comes alive in a hurry. It lifts the ski faster than any other setup Darren has ridden, and the whole bike feels insanely light, aggressive and playful.

WHERE IT SHINES

This probably is not the ultimate weapon for big-mountain missions or neck-deep powder. But when the snow is set up and the terrain gets tight, the 300 XC is an absolute riot. It changes direction easily, rewards an active rider and makes familiar terrain feel fresh again.

WHAT WE LEARNED

The TSP ERM, C3 intake and C3 heated bar / 70°C thermostat combo form the core of the engine and cold-weather setup. We also tried an engine jacket because it looked like a smart addition, but in practice it proved unnecessary.

BUILDER TAKEAWAY

Do not judge this build by the 300 XC's mellow dirt manners. With the 126 x 3.25 Transfer behind it, the bike skips straight to the fun part of the powerband and feels much more aggressive than expected. If light, quick and playful is the goal, this combination deserves a serious look.
